Gas

What should I do if I smell gas?

Act quickly and calmly. Extinguish any flames, avoid operating light switches or appliances, open doors and windows to ventilate, and get everyone outside if the smell is strong.

Turn off the gas supply at the meter if it's safe to do so, then call a licensed gas fitter. Never attempt to locate or repair a gas leak yourself.

Suspect a gas leak? Act immediately

If you smell gas inside, get everyone outside immediately. Avoid operating electrical switches, appliances or phones indoors. If safe to do so, turn off the gas supply at the outdoor meter. From a safe location, call 1800 GAS LEAK (1800 427 532). If there is a fire or an immediate threat to life or property, call 000. Do not re-enter until the property has been assessed as safe.
